Thomas's Story

Hi all, I started Kindergarden at Dunbar when they had sand boxes in the rooms. Yes that's right. There were classes on the first floor that had the little brown wooden chairs, large wooden blocks to play with, and a sand box in the classroom. After Kindergarden I went to Thomas G. Hayes #102 wich was located at Jefferson and Caroline Sts. where St. Phillips Church presently stands. After leaving #102 I came to Dunbar which used to be #133. I went from the seventh grade to the twelth grade at Dunbar and gratuated in 1965. I worked for a while then went into the Marine Corps in December of 1966. After bootcamp I was stationed onboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal which had 5000 Sailors and 52 Marines onboard. It was like a city and we were the police and the protectors of the ship, the crew, and everything else onboard. I was onboard when the ship's jets were flying bombing raids from outside of Vietnam in 1967 when there was an explosion and the ship caught fire. After returning to the States I transfered to Norfolk Va. where I was on guard duty on the gates until...Expand for more
I got my orders to go to Vietnam in 1968. That was an experience I still find hard to sometimes talk about like a lot of others I got wounded a number of times but I made it back to The World, thank God. Afterward I got discharged in 1970. I went from job to job for a while, went to Morgan for two years, I still need twelve credits. I ended up working for Procter & Gamble in Huntvalley and retired in 2009. One thing I enjoyed doing at Dunbar was playing varsity football and baseball. I still love to play sports. And I really miss being around the classmates and the other students, it was a great time in my life. I'll never forget when Gene Autry came to Somerset to see us kids and I got a chance to hold his gun. And when I met Lenny Moore down in the old Gay Street market stalls outside on the sidewalk. My inspiration comes from my grandmother. My sister, brother, and I were about to be put into a foster home when we were real young. My grandmother quit her job and got on welfare to raise and keep us together as a family. She was the rock that held it all together.
